Beechy Woods
Sussex
Beechy Woods is a unique piece of Sussex woodland with epic rock features including a cave, a canyon, high rocky outcrops, & seasonal waterfalls that give it a timeless, almost mystical character. I joined a diverse and inspiring collective of people in 2020 who were interested in purchasing the land for protection, securing it for us, our descendants and the wider community.
The long term aim is to preserve and protect the woodland and its ecosystem, use it for our personal amenity use (including occasional camping) and manage the woodland in a sustainable way that enhances biodiversity.
It’s been a fascinating project to be part of, from both an ecological and organisational perspective. We are 24 shareholders, with a completely flat organisational structure. I have found myself energised by the organisational side of the project, helping implement a model for org design, org structure and decision making that is loosely based off the Sociocracy model — which has a focus on organisational effectiveness and equivalence (non-hierarchical).
