“In the UK’s fastest-changing community we bring dance to people and people to dance, producing ambitious performances that attract wide audiences alongside projects to get all ages dancing.”
East London Dance is a special charity, doing important work in the arts sector. Dance is something that touches all our lives. We all do it. It’s part of all our cultures and communities. But the sector is rife with inequality and elitism. It’s certainly not the case that the most talented dancers across all genres get the same opportunities.
East London Dance support young professionals in the sector through a number of programmes, helping champion diverse, authentic dance talent from across forward thinking genres, those who are often overlooked by the stuffy, traditional, funded dance world.
I was a Trustee with East London Dance for 5 years, from 2016 to 2021. And what a time for this 30 year old organisation. We produced one of the most ambitious dance shows in the City of London since the 2012 Olympics, taking place in the moat of the Tower of London. We moved into a beautiful new home in East London, the Talent House, shared with the brilliant music charity UD. And my final work as a trustee was guiding them through a repositioning and rebrand as they stepped up into a new space, physically and spiritually
I am proud to have supported East London Dance through this journey.
